Assignments

Assignments are only required for those taking the course for a letter grade, but it is highly suggested that all students do the assignments to get the most out of the class. Those taking the course for credit should submit work weekly to your individual DropBox shared with Erin.

Assignment due April 11th:
Shooting RAW and on Manual Setting, pay close attention to your F-stop, shutterspeed and ISO. Try to note how these 3 factors need to change depending on where you shoot. For this assignment, please do not use a tripod. These can be any subject, but try to look for lines, shapes and balance when framing your subject.

-Shoot 5 images outside during the day in bright sun
-Shoot 5 images outside during the day in the shade
-Shoot 5 images inside a building during the day near a window
-Shoot 5 images inside a building during the day near a lamp or overhead light

some tips!
-the lower number the shutter speed, the brighter your image will be. (but if you choose a number smaller than 1/60 you risk motion blur)
-the lower number the F-stop, the brighter your image will be.
-the higher the ISO number, the brighter (yet grainier) your image will be

Assignment Due April 18:

Shoot 2 Night Landscapes.
-One using a high number ISO and a shutter speed of 60 or higher/faster. (no tripod)
-One using an ISO of 200 and a very slow shutter speed (you will need a tripod)
F-Stop can be whatever you choose.

Assignment Due April 25:

Shoot (at least) one portrait using natural light and the techniques we went over in class last week.

Assignment Due May 2:

Retouch one portrait you have shot using the techniques we learned in class last week. To remove blemishes, use Patch, Healing and Clone Stamp tools on a background copy layer or a new empty layer. Use a Curves Adjustment layer to brighten under eyes or add highlights to hair. Use a Hue/Saturation layer to reduce yellow-ness in teeth and brighten teeth.

Assignment Due May 9:

Think about what it is that you want to present as your final portfolio. I suggest shooting a series of images around one theme or subject if possible, but it's also fine to do a sampling of your strongest images (old and new is fine). Bring in as many hi-res or RAW images to class as you have toward this idea. We will spend time in class retouching and prepping images for printing.

Final Project: Due June 6th (final class meeting)
Please present a cohesive series of at least 8 printed images. These can be bound in a photo book or presented as a series of prints (8x10 or larger).  It is suggested that these images be surrounding a common theme. However, you can alternatively present of series of your strongest images covering a variety of topics. We will also be turning this series into an online portfolio.
